Pride Month, which is celebrated by millions of people every year in the month of June, is
a result of people’s willingness to give equality, freedom, rights, attention, and respect
and to promote the visibility of LGBTQ individuals. Starting in the United States of
America, it took more than four decades for this movement to widespread in society, and
finally in 2015 all sections of the society won equal rights. How can one forget the
Stonewall riots, where citizens retaliated against the police force for the first time. All
these small efforts over the years finally moulded this movement.
But do you really think only celebrating pride month guarantees the LGBTQ individuals'
acceptance?
We still have a sector of people who believes only in two genders: male and female.
Adding “others” in the GENDER section doesn’t mean that they will be treated well.
We all have been brought up in a society that does not accept these people and treats
them as untouchables and considers them impure. How can purity be judged by gender?
Why can’t people of the same gender marry each other?
Why are we talking about society, when many of our own families lack this
understanding. Imagine yourself as a lesbian or a gay or a transgender or a bisexual and
you have to confess this to your family. Will that be easy? Many will prefer suicide or
isolation over getting tortured by society every day. How does it feel when your blood do
not accept you? What is the use of celebrating pride month every year with rallies,
slogans, and parties when you can’t convince your own family members about the
importance of this month?
The success of any movement highly depends on individual efforts. Everyone should do
all small tasks possible at the individual level to make the pride month more realistic. We
can at least spread the word to the people around us, to our family members, friends, and
neighbours.
What is the difference between them and us? Or should I ask what is the similarity? They
too are human beings. Isn’t this statement enough. They deserve to live a life with
dignity, they deserve happiness, they deserve everything we have, and they deserve to be
respected.
Who will give them the life they wish for?
WE!! All OF US!!
